Hohner Xpression

Back in 2019, Hohner approached us for input on a new chromatic harmonica they were developing—something affordable yet high-quality. We told them they already had the perfect base: the Discovery 48. Our suggestion was simple—keep the solid foundation but improve the key weak points. Specifically, we recommended replacing the leaky plastic mouthpiece with a rounded stainless steel one and reworking the comb mold for greater precision, similar to what they achieved with the ACE and New Super 64 models.

Not long after, Hohner released a new model: the Xpression. They followed our suggestion on the mouthpiece, but unfortunately didn’t address the comb, which still suffers from imprecise molding and reduced airtightness.

That said, the Xpression turned out to be a fairly good harmonica. With a bit of work on the comb—such as flattening or replacing it—it becomes quite playable and responsive.

Still, it’s worth noting that the Suzuki SCXremains a stronger option in this price range. It’s not only better built and more airtight, but also more affordable. While the Xpression is only available in the key of C, it’s compatible with Chromonica 270 reed plates, so it can be easily converted into other keys.

Xpression Basic

The Basic J.A. Custom Xpression model is a great introduction to our custom harmonica lineup. Each one is individually numbered and carefully set up for improved performance over the stock version. This level includes our Basic reed work—a solid upgrade from factory setup, though not as refined as our higher-tier models.

You’ll get better response, smoother slide mechanism, and noticeably improved tuning compared to stock. The playability across the range is much more balanced.

Xpression Top of the line

This is the pinnacle of what we offer for the Hohner Xpression harmonica. Every detail is customized with precision and care, making this one of the finest custom chromatics available. Every single reed is removed and the reed plates are modified to extend reed life and increase the dynamic range. Holes are drilled and machine tapped for stainless steel reed screws, and all surfaces are flat-sanded to ensure maximum airtightness and precise fit. Each reed is carefully re-profiled, polished, and reattached using stainless steel screws for durability and optimal performance. The finest possible reed curvature is applied to give the best response, and the harmonica is then tuned to exacting standards for superb intonation. Finally, the reed plates undergo a treatment that prolongs reed life and helps maintain tuning stability over time. The result is an instrument capable of whisper-light bends, perfect overblows and overdraws, incredible dynamic range, and exceptional volume—all while maintaining tuning stability over time.
